• Apache was designed by Jack Nicklaus to appeal to golfers with traditional sensibilities. Winding gracefully through gentle desert terrain, the course features large, lush greens that appear as natural extensions of the moderate, rolling fairways, with subtle, grassy catch areas and deceptively sloping putting surfaces for relaxed rounds of golf. Chiricahua is a standout favorite of our Members and their guests, and features striking elevation changes that range from 3,000 feet to its highest point of 3,300 feet. At 7,347 yards, this par-72 target course has eight holes that play downhill, nine that play uphill, and one that plays sideways for an exhilarating combination. The fifth Jack Nicklaus course at Desert Mountain combines the architecture of its four predecessors and offers outstanding views of Metro Phoenix and Scottsdale. A demanding course bordered by the lush Sonoran Desert on all sides, Cochise calls for a well-calculated approach, precision shot-making, and a golfer’s most agile touch to tackle its 7,042 yards of difficult terrain and contoured greens. The magnificent layout is a true skills challenge, with rolling fairways surrounded by water and dramatic rock formations. The hallmarks of the course are the par-3 #7 and par-5 #15 holes, where a shared double green sits on a scenic island approached from two different directions. In September 2024, the course was reopened after an extensive 12-month restoration process by Nicklaus Design. The goal was to restore Cochise to its original playing conditions while modernizing the entire irrigation system. The following course photos were shot before the restoration, however, there were only some very minor course changes. The photos, yardage, and description will give you an accurate understanding of how to play the course. Delight in the sheer drama of teeing off at Geronimo, which is considered to be the most visually intimidating course at Desert Mountain. Fluctuating elevations, deep ravines, and broad fairways make for consistently challenging play as the course winds its way through nature and over stunning desert plateaus. The excitement begins at the first hole, a 570-yard par-5 that drops to a broad fairway and demands a powerful second shot to get into attack position. Don’t let the gentility of the first nine holes deceive you — the back nine are a legitimate test of your skills.
